The Structure of Timber Frame House

Timber Frame Houses have become very popular of late. These structures are basically built completely of heavy timbers. If the open spaces between the timbers have been filled up with plaster, wattle, brick etc. the resultant structure is called “Half Timbered”. These structure were mainly used in the olden days but have of late re-entered the field of architecture. The longing for wide open spaces as well as a collective increase in environmental consciousness has led to an immense demand for these structures. Modern designs have been introduced making the options or house plans virtually endless. The structures are still being built and designed using traditional methods but lot of new techniques have been implemented to enforce them

As a rule the timber frame structure is built in large warehouses. Only skilled craftsmen and carpenters build these structures using traditional and conventional means. The jointing though originally done by lap jointing has now been replaced by pegged mortise and tenon joints. No metal brackets or splines are used in the structure. The frame is fortified such that it alone bears the entire weight of the structure. Dense and durable wood like Oak, Cedar, Douglas fir, and Eastern White Pine along with similar others are used in the construction. The trees are cut down and sized to the required specifications. They are then kiln dried to increase their endurance. The dried timbers are beautiful and elegant. They add a rustic feel to the resultant structure. The frame takes about 3 to 6 weeks to build. It is then systematically de-assembled and put in containers. These containers are then shipped off to the construction sites where they are rebuilt.

These houses are extremely durable and very strong. They can withstand many environmental factors. Though the wood can be coated with varnish for overall protection it can also be plastered over. But plastering the exterior of the structure will take away most of its beauty.

Health and Safety need to prioritize during the construction of the houses. There is generally a Health and Safety expert part of construction team to assist with the personnel and keep everything to code. Since these houses are meant to last a lifetime taking safety measures almost guarantees no future problems. Houses are not the only structures that are built with timber frames. Sheds and barns are also fast becoming very popular. Most stables are also built in the same manner.

Dried Lavender can be used in multiple ways around the home to keep it naturally scented and fresh

The dried flowers of the scented English lavenders can be used in multiple ways around the home to keep it naturally scented and fresh. Beside the clean, sweet-sharp and slightly old-fashioned scent of lavender, all those toxic artificial thingummies seem pretty pathetic.

Dried lavender and the scent of lavender have long been associated with linen cupboards and laundry. This is because lavender contains a natural insect repellent which helps to keep moths and other unwanted lodgers at bay, such as ants and silverfish (and probably cockroaches, at least to some extent). Lavender smells much nicer on clothes than mothballs by a long chalk. It may also be used in the vacuum cleaner to prevent the bad smell of dust when doing the domestic cleaning.

Most people associate dried lavender flowers in the home with dried flower arrangements and potpourri. If you want it for the scent rather than for the looks, the old-fashioned pot-pourri bowl is best. Stirring the dried flowerheads of the lavender releases the scent. If the lavender gets a bit old and tired and loses its scent, replace it with fresh lavender or else add a few drops of lavender essential oil to recharge the scent.

Lavender bags are another traditional way of keeping your linens (and all your other clothes) smelling fresh and for keeping insects away. This allows the scent of lavender to get into the clothing in your drawer, but the dried flower heads don’t break off, leaving you with itchy dried bits in your knickers. You can buy ready-made lavender bags at gift shops and the like. These are usually made from delicate floral cotton lawn and trimmed with lace and ribbon, but this fabric choice doesn’t affect the scent. A hanky tied shut with a rubber band or a bit of string does just as good a job, and there’s no rule engraved in stone saying that you can’t make a lavender bag out of camo print tied shut with thin rope (now there’s an unexploited market niche…). If you put some lavender bags in your wardrobe will make your room smell fresh and like it’s just been cleaned by your house cleaner.

A lavender bag can be used as a bath bag. Drop one in your bath. This can only be used once or twice. If you want to make a larger lavender bag, you can use it as a cushion. The scent will be released when it is sat on.

Bunches of dried lavender kept in one piece by bits of string or ribbon are best kept for sheets and pillowcases, as these get shaken out before use and so the problem of little bits getting stuck and itching you is less of a problem. Tuck these bunches of lavender into piles of sheets at regular intervals and move the periodically as the sheets get used. Make sure the lavender is dried before you put it into the sheets – dry stuff might go off or get odd smears on your best white Egyptian cottons.

Lavender bottles are a fancier variation on the bunches that have slightly less likelihood of shedding bits. To make a lavender bottle, get a bunch of fresh lavender and tie them tightly together just below the flower head. Then bend the stalks down so they enclose the flowers in a sort of cage. Tie the stems down below the flower head just below where you tied them at first, and then tie them together again at the ends. It looks a bit like a very long-necked bottle; hence the name.

Lavender bunches and bottles can also be kept in kitchen cupboards to deter ants and the like. It’s best to store them in dried goods that won’t get too badly affected by the scent/taste of lavender. A good suggestion that doesn’t leave you with lavender-flavoured salt or beans is to put the bunches on the shelf or in the cupboard between the boxes, containers and bags of dry goods, which should put the ants and silverfish off before they find their way into your flour.

Several Flowers you could Decorate both your Bureau and Home

An apartment or bureau without any coloring or decoration makes you feel like being in a very sterile environment and in the end, you may get or feel depressed. Now, there are many things you could decorate your surrounding with. Like previously mentioned, for example sculptures, art and paintings or wallpapers, either of stars, games or concerning your hobbies. Alternatively, you could style your walls up with postcards or so, but that’s another topic. Today I’ll present you with several flowers you could decorate both your bureau and home with. Especially in a big bureau with several people in it, flowers always add a very nice feeling to your working day.

You could try choosing a plant with larger or bigger branches for open-plan office borders or limitations, like the so-called spider plant (lat. “Chlorophytum”). It withstands both warm and cold air, as well as dry and a bit more humid one. It won’t bother if you don’t water it for 2-3 days and grows at both dark and bright locations.

If truncated often enough, you could also try keeping the “Ficus elastica”, aka Indian rubber or simply gum tree. Even though it requires to be truncated at least every 2 weeks as it can get up to 5m tall and very big, it won’t mind not getting enough water and is also very robust otherwise, though you also have to manure it regularly. Make sure to not place it next to a heater though.

Another nice plant, even though a bit harder to keep, is the date palm, in Latin called “Phoenix canariensis”. It’s one of the most bought room plants in both Europe and North America and grows very fast if supplied with enough light, which it should always be provided with. It’s best to place it at either a window located to the south or if you don’t want it to grow too fast “half-shadowed”, so with only a part of it located in sunlight. It requires much water when it’s warmer out- and inside, though only a very little amount in winter when being kept at around 10C (~45F).

A few other very important facts about plants is, that they clean the air and produce oxygen, especially important in bureaus and of course at home, too. They filter out CO2 for example. Also important is that they evaporate the water they previously got via their leafs. Especially the date palm and the rubber tree feature this, therefore they also reduce the risk of asthma due to the more humid air. Last but not least, they – as weird as it may sound – also reduce the noise level at work or school, because they chill everything down a bit and also have some effect on the soul.

I hope I was able to give you a small overview over the most interesting and important plants, making sure that it is suitable for your home or apartment and making sure to improve your and your families or fellow co-workers feelings as well as allowing you to create a nicer environment!
