My personal favorite is ceramic tile which is very durable and long lasting as well as being resistant to scratches, fire, and water. It also doesn’t hold in odor and bacteria, like carpet does, which is excellent especially if you have pets. The only downside to me is that it is very slippery so it may not be practical if you have small children or if you are elderly. Overall however, tile is a very good choice and makes for very easy cleaning and maintenance.

Of course your other choice is carpet which is easy of the feet and offers a warmer surface, particularly in the winter time when you may not want to put your feet on a tile floor. My suggestion is to use carpet in bedroom areas that are so highly trafficked and use laminate or tile in the living areas.

Frank Lloyd Wright – perhaps America’s best-known architect – is credited with creating the Prairie style house plan in the early twentieth century. As a young architect working with architect Louis Sullivan in Chicago, Sullivan and Wright’s main goal was to design structures which were organic and which blended with their natural surroundings. The basic Prairie style features strong horizontal lines with cantilevers and large, overhanging eaves. Interiors of buildings were informal and cozy, echoing the relaxed spirit of the American Midwest.

Wright intended the Prairie style to be an affordable, suburban home for people who work in the city and need space to distress and connect with nature when they return from their days on the job. Long horizontal lines dominate the Prairie style; Prairie structures are longer than they are tall, and their windows, masonry, and stucco are used in such a way as to accentuate the linear design. The roofs are low-pitched to blend with the lines of the flat prairie, and eaves are employed to offer deep, overhanging spaces. Prairie home interiors usually revolve around a central hearth, and feature abstract or geometric shapes. Both interiors and exteriors feature earth-toned colors which mimic the shades to be found in nature.

Although a century old, Prairie house floor plans are still popular today because they emphasize the use of organic design and sustainable materials. The style has a light, airy design which blends in with its environment, often using skylights to bring natural light into the home. Prairie style homes frequently have a common room and no hallway on the first floor. The floor plan follows a modular grid design which uses only right angles; and hardwood floor, wooden columns, interior wood accents, and stained or art glass windows provide interior ornamentation. Prairie style homes feature the colors found in nature, such as browns, tans, greens, and rusts; as well as wood tones of dark or medium brown both on exteriors and interiors.

Horizontal bands of wood on interior walls is also a common feature of Prairie design. Walls may be skim-coated with rough or sand textured plaster in order to emphasize the organic nature of this style. Paint glaze, or suede technique for walls, gives them additional depth and texture. Some of the woods commonly employed in Prairie house plans include birch, oak, and maple; but any native species fits the Prairie ideal of using sustainable, local materials. Stencils with Prairie style designs, often inspired by nature or geometric patterns, are sometimes used to fill in the space between the windows and ceiling. The overall look is one of straight, horizontal lines; a large and low porch flanked by square columns; wide central chimneys and upper stories; clay tile roofs with wide eaves which provide cooling shade from the sunny expanse of the prairie.

Timber Frame Houses have become very popular of late. These structures are basically built completely of heavy timbers. If the open spaces between the timbers have been filled up with plaster, wattle, brick etc. the resultant structure is called “Half Timbered”. These structure were mainly used in the olden days but have of late re-entered the field of architecture. The longing for wide open spaces as well as a collective increase in environmental consciousness has led to an immense demand for these structures. Modern designs have been introduced making the options or house plans virtually endless. The structures are still being built and designed using traditional methods but lot of new techniques have been implemented to enforce them

As a rule the timber frame structure is built in large warehouses. Only skilled craftsmen and carpenters build these structures using traditional and conventional means. The jointing though originally done by lap jointing has now been replaced by pegged mortise and tenon joints. No metal brackets or splines are used in the structure. The frame is fortified such that it alone bears the entire weight of the structure. Dense and durable wood like Oak, Cedar, Douglas fir, and Eastern White Pine along with similar others are used in the construction. The trees are cut down and sized to the required specifications. They are then kiln dried to increase their endurance. The dried timbers are beautiful and elegant. They add a rustic feel to the resultant structure. The frame takes about 3 to 6 weeks to build. It is then systematically de-assembled and put in containers. These containers are then shipped off to the construction sites where they are rebuilt.

These houses are extremely durable and very strong. They can withstand many environmental factors. Though the wood can be coated with varnish for overall protection it can also be plastered over. But plastering the exterior of the structure will take away most of its beauty.

Health and Safety need to prioritize during the construction of the houses. There is generally a Health and Safety expert part of construction team to assist with the personnel and keep everything to code. Since these houses are meant to last a lifetime taking safety measures almost guarantees no future problems. Houses are not the only structures that are built with timber frames. Sheds and barns are also fast becoming very popular. Most stables are also built in the same manner.
