Traditional Chinese Furniture
Chinese furniture from the more austere evolved into a complex, linked to social and cultural history of China. Prior to the Tang Dynasty, there were no seats, but sat on straw mats. After the dynasty of the Warring States (475-221 BC), it was widespread use as a seat sofas and beds.
During the Wei-Chi (AD 220-420), begins the use of Western-style chairs, and mats of straw were used to cover beds and sofas.
The great development of Chinese furniture:
During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Chinese furniture had a great evolution. The red lacquer finish, inlaid with mother of pearl, shell and jade, were preferred. These furnishings were a single line, with little decoration.
In contrast, Ts’ing Dynasty (1644-1911), but adopted the red lacquer finish and inlaid with precious materials, decoration becomes complex, due to advances in craft techniques, promoted by trade with abroad.
These two dynasties brought a major breakthrough in the manufacture of furniture. There are two kinds of Chinese furniture, lacquered and hardwood. Lacquered furniture was used in palaces and temples, and houses of the nobles.
There are a variety of lacquered furniture, the style t’ihung “in carved lacquer, and the” have-ch’i “, where the lacquer is used to fill a figure carved in wood, which must then be smoothed. The “miao-ch’i,” outlined lacquers the “luo-tien” pearl inlays.
The woods used are pear, red sandalwood, the padauk, ebony, and nanmu. Red sandalwood is the most dense, hard and weather resistant, so it is preferred.
Also used in traditional furniture, bamboo, palm and rattan. The inlay is very popular in China, used stones, jade, ivory, horn, agate, amber, all colors and sheens. The relief and engraving are the most common sizes, and use as motifs, flowers, dragons, mythological animals, etc.
